STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE "The Passenger" TEASER FADE IN: 1 EXT. SPACE - RUNABOUT (OPTICAL) The Runabout Rio Grande cruises through empty space. 2 INT. RUNABOUT KIRA is at the controls. BASHIR is working on a PADD... preparing a medical report... after a beat, Kira pushes herself into saying with admiration... KIRA I've never seen anything like that. BASHIR (working) Hmm? KIRA (repeating) I've never seen anything like that. BASHIR The woman? KIRA She was dead... the tricorder clearly showed... BASHIR Ah yes, well tricorders... very accurate with live people, not so accurate with dead ones... we learn that in the first year of medical school... Trying very hard to give him a compliment... KIRA Well, I was impressed, Doctor. BASHIR (working) Hmmm. And well you should be. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 12/09/92 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: That leaves her mouth open... and now he gets quite expansive about himself... given the opportunity... BASHIR I impressed myself on this one actually. I can't imagine what other Doctor would even consider examining the scapular nodes for parasitic infection. I just seem to have a talent. A vision that sees past the obvious, around the mundane... right to the target. Fate has granted me a special gift, Major. A gift to be a healer. And now her mouth is dragging on the floor... KIRA (what an ass) I feel privileged to be in your presence. BASHIR (the sport) Glad to have you along. Luckily for him, a warning light flashes on the console. COMPUTER VOICE Detecting a priority one broad band distress signal. Kira and Bashir are instantly all business. She presses some panels... the audio message comes through a little distorted, but intelligible. The voice on the message is female and belongs to TY KAJADA, whom we will meet soon. KAJADA (O.S) Kobliad transport Reyab to any ship. Our central power linkage has exploded. We're losing life support. Please respond... Bashir consults a console. BASHIR Just picking it up on long range sensors. Bearing three four seven mark zero eight. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 12/09/92 - TEASER 2A. 2 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA (pressing information into panels, then checking) I'm reading massive energy leakage... its aft structural integrity field is failing... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 12/09/92 - TEASER 3. 2 CONTINUED: (3) Kira lays in a new course and activates the Runabout's subspace radio. KIRA (to com) This is the Federation Ship Rio Grande. We're on our way. 3 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout alters course and moves away. 4 INT. KOBLIAD TRANSPORT - CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) A smoke-filled hallway... a Kobliad woman (KAJADA) dressed in a military type uniform is unconscious on the floor... she's burned slightly... Bashir and Kira BEAM IN. They immediately feel the effect of falling life support... hard to breathe... They take tricorder readings. BASHIR O-2 pressure dropping rapidly... toxic gas levels rising... we have no more than ten minutes breathing time left in here... KIRA Automatic fire suppression must be off-line. I'll check the central power linkage... She moves through the corridor and EXITS... Bashir moves to Kajada... examines her with his tricorder... she moves with a start at his touch... BASHIR Relax. I'm a doctor... He shoots Kajada with a hypospray from his medkit. Kajada slowly comes around. KAJADA (groggy) What happened? BASHIR You lost consciousness. (a beat) We've got to evacuate your ship. How many others are on board? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 12/09/92 - TEASER 3A. 4 CONTINUED: KAJADA (struggling to maintain consciousness) The pilot... is dead... Bashir is already looking at his tricorder which leads him to a door near Kajada... BASHIR I'm reading another lifeform... KAJADA No... don't open that... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - TEASER 4. 4 CONTINUED: Bashir ignores her warning, presses the panel... it doesn't open the door... BASHIR It's sealed... KAJADA Prisoner... I'm transporting... he started the fire... to escape... BASHIR He's dying. Where's the manual override... KAJADA No... Bashir scans the hallway... moves down the hallway to a panel... opens it and hits a padd... the door slides open... flames shoot out into the corridor... Bashir braves them to go inside... Kajada driven by her own determination gets to her feet and follows... KAJADA Don't... 5 INT. KOBLIAD TRANSPORT - HOLDING CELL A small room, full of fire and smoke. A Kobliad male (RAO VANTIKA) is collapsed on the floor. He is badly burned, barely alive. Bashir opens his medkit and goes to work. KAJADA He's... dangerous. BASHIR I assure you, in this condition, he's no threat to anyone. Kira runs in from the corridor with a 24th century fire extinguisher... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 12/09/92 - TEASER 5. 5 CONTINUED: KIRA Power linkages are completely shot... maneuvering subsystems are out... I've managed to stabilize the structural integrity field, but I don't know how long that will last... we'll have to tow it in... As she shoots nitrogen on the fire, Bashir injects Vantika with the hypospray, but the criminal remains comatose. BASHIR His synaptic fields are dissipating... I can't get a neural reading... I have to get him to the emergency unit in the Runabout. KIRA (nods, hits combadge) Computer, four to transport... Suddenly, Vantika reaches out with one hand and grabs Bashir by the throat. He pulls Bashir down until the two men are eye to eye. Bashir struggles, trying to pull back from Vantika's badly burned face. VANTIKA (harsh, gravelly voice) ...make... me... live... Bashir wrestles to free himself from Vantika's vice-like grip. Kira rushes to the doctor's rescue, but, before they can do anything, Vantika releases Bashir and slumps to the ground. Bashir scans Vantika with his tricorder. Touches his neck. Almost immediately, Kajada slumps and Kira supports her... BASHIR (shakes his head) This one I can't bring back. As they exchange a glance... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT ONE 6. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.) 6 EXT. Pull back to take in... 8 BASHIR looking down at Kajada in concern. KAJADA (weakly) Where am I? BASHIR You're on Station D.S. Nine... I'm Doctor Bashir... KAJADA Ty Kajada... Kobliad Security... (late reaction) D.S. Nine... but that's where he was going... Kajada tries to get up... panicky... KAJADA (continuing) Where is he? Where is Vantika? BASHIR Your prisoner? He's dead. KAJADA You're certain. BASHIR Yes. You were the only survivor. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 7. 8 CONTINUED: KAJADA Where's his body? BASHIR I have it in stasis. KAJADA I want to see it. BASHIR Later, when you're feeling stronger... KAJADA Now. Bashir reacts and... TIME CUT TO: 9 INT. STASIS ROOM - A BODY CABINET (OPTICAL) Vantika has been laid out on the shelf... Bashir hits a button... the shelf slides out of the wall and a stasis forcefield ZAPS off. BASHIR The preliminary examination indicated that the subject died of a massive respiratory failure, brought on by the pulmonary trauma suffered in the fire. KAJADA Are you sure it's the same body? BASHIR (a little surprised at the question) Quite certain. It's been sealed in here ever since our arrival. She picks up a small laser penlight, looks in his eyes... KAJADA Have you run a retinal imaging scan? BASHIR What for... ? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT ONE 8. 9 CONTINUED: KAJADA To confirm there is no residual activity in the visual cortex... BASHIR Miss Kajada, I assure you he is dead... KAJADA He's faked his death more times than I can tell you, Doctor. The last time someone thought he was dead, they didn't live to regret the mistake. She looks around the workstation and casually picks up a long, narrow-tipped tool. BASHIR He was a murderer... ? KAJADA That description doesn't do justice to the horrors he is responsible for on my world. (beat, studying him) He is quite brilliant in his way. A man of science. Who killed others to prolong his own life. I've tracked him for twenty years. A beat. Then, Kajada takes the tool and plunges it down in Vantika's chest. Bashir reacts with shock. KAJADA (calmly) Please perform an autopsy. I want his identity confirmed with a DNA reference scan. BASHIR (still shaken) Of course. KAJADA And have someone scan my ship to make sure there are no anomalous life forms on board... BASHIR Are you sure that's necessary? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 9. 9 CONTINUED: (2) KAJADA Very sure. On her determined look... Bashir reacts and... 10 INT. QUARK'S On Quark's hand as QUARK places a cup of iced coffee on the bar. QUARK Iced Raktajino. Extra cream. Pull back to take in... 11 THE WHOLE BAR DAX takes the cup of Klingon coffee. DAX Thank you, Quark. QUARK (smitten) At your service. Day or night. Dax smiles slightly and walks away with her coffee. Quark watches her go with a lascivious eye. QUARK (an aside) Poor woman. She's obviously infatuated with me. ODO snorts in derision from his usual seat at the end of the bar. A few yards away, within earshot is LIEUTENANT PRIMMIN, a Starfleet security officer in his mid-thirties. He has a friendly face, an easygoing smile and a passing resemblance to a teddy bear. ODO You're deluding yourself. QUARK There's nothing wrong with a good delusion. I sell them upstairs to dozens of people every day. (beat) Besides, there's something in her eyes when she looks at me. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT ONE 10. 11 CONTINUED: ODO An allergic reaction, no doubt. QUARK I think she's lonely. ODO Dax? She has ten lifetimes of friends to call on before she calls you. And every man on the station would like to be buying her a Raktajino. QUARK Ah, but I'm the one with the Raktajino machine. ODO She seems to prefer to spend most of her time alone... which I understand perfectly. QUARK Well, then that must make her the perfect woman for you. ODO I wouldn't intrude on her privacy as some would. QUARK You're pathetic. You think everyone in the galaxy should be as lonely and miserable as you are. Quark looks longingly at Dax, who has taken a seat at one of the tables and is reading from a PADD and sipping her coffee. QUARK As hard as it may be for you to understand, some of us like company. The sound of a friendly voice. The sight of a familiar face. (stares hungrily at Dax) The feel of smooth, pliant flesh. Quark is almost drooling. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT ONE 11. 11 CONTINUED: (2) ODO (re: Dax) Why do you bother? QUARK It's good to want things. ODO Even things you can't have? QUARK Especially things I can't have. ODO (casual) Like the Deuridium shipment? QUARK (not a blink, "innocent," new game) Deuridium shipment. Is there a deuridium shipment coming here? ODO I'm watching you, Quark. Moving away... staying with Quark a beat... still looking at Dax across the room... QUARK (sighs, to himself) And I'm watching you, Jadzia. 12 ANGLE - OVER HIS SHOULDER At Dax as she looks up and makes eye contact with Quark... and it's that quick moment with a woman that takes your breath away... she smiles and looks back down at her PADD... 13 ANGLE - QUARK feels his heart jump to his throat... as we move to find Primmin moving to join Odo just before he exits... 14 CLOSER ON ODO AND PRIMMIN PRIMMIN Interesting technique. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 12. 14 CONTINUED: Odo pauses to see who's addressing him. PRIMMIN Do you always get ready for an important operation by leaking word about it to the local black market? Odo looks at Primmin with disapproval. ODO The way I handle my business is none of your concern. Odo EXITS. Primmin follows. 15 INT. PROMENADE - CONTINUOUS - MOVING WITH THEM PRIMMIN I'm afraid it is. Primmin tries to keep up with Odo. PRIMMIN (continuing) Lieutenant George Primmin. Starfleet security. No response from Odo. PRIMMIN If you don't mind, I'd like to talk to you about the deuridium shipment from the Gamma Quadrant. ODO We have nothing to discuss. Security is already in place. PRIMMIN I'd appreciate it if we could go over it anyway. It took me three weeks to get here. I'd hate to think it was for nothing. ODO (begrudgingly) If you insist. Meet me in my office at seventeen hundred hours. Odo walks away... Primmin studies him a beat... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 13. 16 INT. OPS SISKO, Kira, Dax and Bashir are conferring. BASHIR The autopsy revealed nothing out of the ordinary. Fingerprints, cerebral cortex scan, and retinal patterns all match up perfectly with the records Kajada provided. Vantika may have faked his death before, but I don't think he's faking this time. SISKO Why was he coming here? BASHIR (self-evident) They're Kobliad. DAX (understands immediately) The deuridium. KIRA I'm sorry... ? SISKO The Kobliad is a dying race. They need deuridium to stabilize their cell structure. It prolongs their lifespan... DAX The Federation's been working to supply them with deuridium, but even the new deposits from the Gamma Quadrant won't be enough to service the whole population. It's so scarce, some of the Kobliad have gone underground to get it. KIRA So he was coming here to hijack the shipment. SISKO Is Kajada satisfied with your autopsy? BASHIR I don't think anything's going to convince her he's dead, Commander. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/01/92 - ACT ONE 14. 16 CONTINUED: DAX Vantika has been the focus of Kajada's attention for most of her adult life. In a way, they were as intimately connected as any two people could be. SISKO (a thoughtful beat) Let's do her the courtesy of granting her requests as long as they're not too far out of line. A quick sweep of her ship isn't too much to ask. Dax nods and Sisko rises signaling the meeting is ending... SISKO I'm more concerned that he might have had help waiting here to hijack the shipment. Over the last line, Primmin is arriving on the Turbolift... as Sisko sees him... SISKO Mister Primmin, good. In my office. I need to brief you on an unusual security issue that's been raised... KIRA (protecting her own) I'll get Odo up here... PRIMMIN (reacts) Ah... that's okay, Major. I'll fill him in later on anything he needs to know. He moves toward Sisko's office. Kira doesn't like Odo being cut out of the briefing, looks to Sisko for a response. He's noticed Primmin's attitude, but chooses not to give her one... moves after Primmin into his office. 16A INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS SISKO How are you getting on with Constable Odo, Lieutenant? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT ONE 14A. 16A CONTINUED: PRIMMIN I'm sure he's good at keeping order down there on the Promenade... (implied "but") SISKO (beat) But... PRIMMIN Frankly, isn't the security of a deuridium shipment a little over his head... I mean he was chatting about it in the bar with that Ferengi Quark... if I could overhear it, so could half-dozen others... SISKO It's hard to keep a secret in a place like this, Lieutenant. It's not a starship... PRIMMIN I understand that, but... SISKO I'm sure almost everyone knows about the shipment by now. Odo was probably making sure Quark knows we know he knows. PRIMMIN (too chummy for a subordinate) Well, it's not how we learned it at the academy, is it, sir. If you want my opinion... SISKO Actually, I don't. (beat, off Primmin's take) You and I are guests of the Bajorans, Lieutenant. You don't have to forget what you learned at the academy... just don't throw it in anyone's face here. If you're really smart, you might even learn a few new things about station security from our Constable. Clear? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT ONE 14B. 16A CONTINUED: (2) PRIMMIN Very clear, sir. Sisko nods a satisfied acknowledgement... to button the scene he sits down... as Primmin licks his wounds silently -- SISKO (O.S.) Now, regarding the shipment, we've been made aware of a possible Kobliad plot to hijack the deuridium... you and Odo ought to have a talk with Kajada, the Kobliad security officer who arrived yesterday... 17 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Stock. 18 INT. ODO'S OFFICE Primmin ENTERS Odo's office. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 15. 18 CONTINUED: PRIMMIN Before we get started, I want to apologize for us getting off on the wrong foot. ODO (dismissive) Think nothing of it. PRIMMIN Listen, this is your bailiwick. I know that. And I don't mean to be throwing my weight around. No hard feelings. He sticks out his hand again. ODO (barely warming) None at all. This time Odo shakes it. PRIMMIN Just because I'm from Starfleet Security doesn't mean I don't respect your opinion. How about showing me what you've got and I'll see if there's anything we can work with. ODO (stiffens) Lieutenant, you're welcome to see my plans, but I assure you, I've taken every precaution regarding the shipment. Odo sits, punches up the information on his computer... ODO Of course, if you have any suggestions, I'll be happy to hear them. He throws a guarded glance at the Starfleet officer... he looks back at the computer, reacts... as does Primmin... ODO What the... (presses combadge) Odo to Ops... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT ONE 16. 18 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA'S COM VOICE Go ahead. ODO Major, are we having some sort of computer problem? 19 INT. OPS Kira is at the Operations Table, consulting the readouts with concern. KIRA Everything in active memory has been accessed and purged. 20 INT. SECURITY OFFICE SOUND of a door opening. ODO That's impossible. KAJADA (O.S.) Oh, it's possible. Odo and Primmin turn around and see Kajada standing in the doorway to the Promenade... KAJADA Vantika did the exact same thing on Rigel Seven. And on Odo's reaction... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT TWO 17. ACT TWO FADE IN: 21 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) STOCK 22 INT. OPS The table. Kajada addresses Sisko, Kira, Dax, Bashir, Odo and Primmin... she is impatient... KAJADA I know Vantika. I've learned to think as he thinks... BASHIR (exasperated) Kajada, our best evidence suggests Vantika stopped thinking two days ago... KAJADA (calm) He's alive. And he's on board this station... and the minute he came on board, his first thought was to plan a way to access your security files on the deuridium shipment... which is exactly what he's done. PRIMMIN Even if he was alive, it doesn't make sense that he would purge an entire computer memory to go after a single file... ODO It makes perfect sense. (off reactions) Try to access the single file and you'd be stopped by a dozen different lock-outs that I put in to protect it. KAJADA But you would never consider locking out the active memory of your whole system... KIRA That would make it impossible to use the computers at all... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/03/92 - ACT TWO 18. 22 CONTINUED: KAJADA So that's where you're vulnerable. Dax stands, thoughtful, on the way to her station -- DAX But how would he gain access? KAJADA (a beat, thinking as Vantika) In the past, he's used a subspace shunt attached to a secondary system, something that runs through the entire facility but isn't covered by security. KIRA (suggestions) The lighting controls or maybe the replicators. Dax presses some panels... reacts, Kajada's right... she looks up... DAX I'm showing an unauthorized tap into the computer system at a temperature control panel... Level twenty-one. Section ten. ODO & PRIMMIN (in unison) Security to... They stop a beat to look at each other... ODO (stern, finishing) ... to L-twenty-one, S-ten. We're looking for a subspace crossover link to the computer system... SECURITY VOICE Acknowledged. KAJADA Tell them to be careful. Vantika undoubtably equipped the shunt with an auto-destruct system. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT TWO 19. 22 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA (very curious about this woman) You know that for certain... without even checking. KAJADA I know Vantika. Sisko rises thoughtfully... he's heard enough, tries to make sense of this... paces... SISKO Miss Kajada, I have to admit I'm having a tough time with your theory... KAJADA Then you're making a fatal mistake. SISKO There were three passengers on your ship... two bodies are in our morgue. Unless the ghost of Vantika is wandering our halls... KAJADA Don't patronize me, Commander... SISKO Isn't it more likely that some accomplice did this? And now she rises... KAJADA Rao Vantika is obsessed with his own survival. He's prolonged his life with drugs, cryogenics, transplants. As a medical supervisor in a high security penitentiary, he used prisoners for illegal experiments in cellular longevity. He organized raids on government labs to steal bio-regenerative research. I promise you when he started that fire on my ship, he had a plan to survive. I don't know what that plan was, but I'm convinced it succeeded. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT TWO 20. 22 CONTINUED: (3) She shares a long look with Sisko... finally he turns to Bashir. SISKO Doctor, how soon before we get the results of the DNA trace? BASHIR I sent it to Starfleet Command yesterday... they'll have to coordinate with Kobliad security... I'd guess another twelve hours. SISKO (beat) Until then, we'll operate under the assumption that Vantika's alive. He nods, the meeting is over, moves toward his office... Odo follows him... ODO Commander... may I have a word with you... Sisko acknowledges and they walk into... 23 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS SISKO What's on your mind. ODO My resignation. SISKO You're overreacting. ODO Oh, so you already know about this. SISKO Lieutenant Primmin mentioned to me that... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT TWO 21. 23 CONTINUED: ODO You asked me to stay in charge of security when you took command of this station... I didn't ask you... SISKO (warm, disarming) Constable, no one knows this station like you do... ODO Yes, I've noticed that. "Constable." Very cute. SISKO It's an expression of affection... I believe Major Kira was the first to... ODO (overlapping) I don't need anyone's affection. I do need clear jurisdiction. Or I'm out. A long beat as Sisko studies him... SISKO I like you, Odo. I like to know where a man stands. And there's never any question of that with you. I need you here. No Starfleet officer can do the job you do. ODO You've got that straight. SISKO But you have to realize that Starfleet is not going to take command of a station in deep space without assigning some security to protect its interests. ODO Understandable. SISKO You're going to have to work with Primmin. The two of you have to find a way to get along. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT TWO 22. 23 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Tell that to him. SISKO I already have. ODO Who's in charge. SISKO (beat) In joint operations like this one, you are. ODO I can live with that arrangement. And he EXITS. Sisko almost smiles. 24 INT. LAB (VPB) Sisko ENTERS... SISKO What have you got, Dax? DAX Not exactly sure, yet. I finished the sweep of Kajada's ship... no anomalous readings but I did notice one odd thing... SISKO What's that? DAX Somebody tried to break into the ship's cargo bay. SISKO Since it's been docked? DAX (acknowledges) Kira confirmed that there was no damage to the cargo area when they brought it in. SISKO What do you think they were after? DAX This, maybe... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT TWO 23. 24 CONTINUED: She holds up a small chip... as she puts it into a reader... DAX I found it with Vantika's personal belongings. On the monitor... a complex sub-atomic map... with a variety of equations noted... and a vast array of chemical and electrical patterns... and complete medical terms... SISKO What the hell is it? DAX A map. Of a humanoid brain. Off Sisko's reaction... 25 INT. QUARK'S SECOND FLOOR - NIGHT The bar is closed... Quark is on his hands and knees, examining the floor... his eyes catch a gleam and he crawls over and picks up a coin and puts it in his pocket, shakes his head... stands... 26 ANGLE LOOKING DOWN A PAIR OF FERENGI are downstairs straightening up... QUARK You call this clean? They look up and then at each other with fear... QUARK I've already found three coins on the floor up here... who knows what else there might be... somebody might have lost some valuable jewelry or something... fine, never mind, I'll do it myself... and I'll keep it myself. Leave... They scurry away... Quark turns and examines more of the floor... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT TWO 24. QUARK You just can't find good help any more. Out of the shadows, from behind him, a dark figure moves and grabs him from behind, a gloved hand covering the Ferengi's mouth... he struggles for a beat... as the rasping voice whispers in his ear... VANTIKA (O.S.) Have you made the preparations? QUARK Preparations? What preparations? VANTIKA (O.S.) The deuridium shipment. You were to hire mercenaries to help me. QUARK Help you... (beat, gasps) But. You can't be... Vantika... VANTIKA (O.S.) I told you to expect me on this date. QUARK Yes, and I contacted some very reliable soldiers of fortune in anticipation of your arrival... but I was told you were dead... VANTIKA (O.S.) Almost. But not quite. He pushes Quark away and disappears out the door before Quark can see him... as Quark reacts... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT THREE 25. ACT THREE FADE IN: 27 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) 28 INT. INFIRMARY Kajada ENTERS the Infirmary. Bashir is running an instrument over the back of an N.D. Starfleet CREWMEMBER and doesn't notice her. KAJADA You wanted to see me? Bashir looks up from his work. BASHIR Kajada. Be right with you. Bashir finishes using the instrument on the Crewmember. BASHIR (to the crewmember) There, now remember, next time lift with your back straight and use the anti-gravity generator. The crewmember nods and EXITS. Bashir turns to Kajada. BASHIR I'm sorry. Come in. I have the DNA scan results. I thought you might want to see them. (a beat) In fact, I tried to contact you last night, but you never responded to the com. Kajada looks uncomfortable. KAJADA I... I have trouble sleeping. Last night was... particularly bad... I used an Alpha Wave inducer to help me. BASHIR (professional concern) You should be careful with those. They're only meant for occasional use. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT THREE 26. 28 CONTINUED: KAJADA (changing the subject) The scan results, Doctor. Bashir moves to a console, calls up a report we don't need to see... she studies it closely... BASHIR There wasn't even a trace of diploid variation. It's definitely not a clone. He changes a page. BASHIR Positive identification. Rao Vantika. KAJADA (unwavering) They must have overlooked something. She continues to read the report... DAX'S COM VOICE Dax to Bashir. BASHIR Yes, Jadzia... DAX I need some medical advice... can you come to my lab... ? BASHIR With wings on my heels. Bashir out. (to Kajada) Every conceivable test has been done, Kajada. He EXITS... she frowns, continues to read... changes a page... 29 INT. PROMENADE as Bashir moves down the thoroughfare toward a Turbolift, he passes an airlock tunnel... he does not notice three men emerging. One of them is a fierce alien named DURG along with TWO BAJORANS. They walk toward Quark's. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT THREE 27. 30 INT. LAB - CLOSE ON THE MONITOR (VPB) A closer look at an area of the brain on Vantika's map... DAX (O.S.) Here's the hypothesis... the body dies... but the consciousness lives on... Revealing Dax and Bashir studying... BASHIR In another brain... ? DAX Possible? BASHIR The closest thing I've encountered is synaptic pattern displacement. But that's never been done by a non- Vulcan. DAX I'm convinced Vantika was working on it... there are over seventy different computer simulations in his file... all involve identifying neural energy patterns and storing them in different areas of the brain... BASHIR There'd be plenty of room... a humanoid uses only a small portion of the brain. DAX So what if another entity shared the unused portion... BASHIR (realizing) Hypothetically, Vantika's consciousness could be occupying someone else's brain while he waits for the deuridium to arrive. But whose? A beat as they come to the same guess. BASHIR Kajada? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT THREE 28. 30 CONTINUED: DAX (a real possibility) They're both Kobliad. What better place to hide than in the mind of your worst enemy? 31 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE Odo, Primmin, Sisko, Dax, Bashir. Reacting to the theory he's just been told. SISKO It doesn't make sense. She's been doing everything she can to convince us Vantika is alive. If Vantika's controlling her, why would he call attention to himself? DAX We're not suggesting he's controlling her. BASHIR Look, this is all theoretical, but to extend the logic, there's no reason to believe she would even be aware of his presence... DAX Like a stowaway on a ship... the pilot is still at the helm, but someone else is along for the ride. Sisko considers this. SISKO Would an examination of Kajada confirm any of this? BASHIR We don't know what we're looking for yet. We have to identify the method of transfer first. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/03/92 - ACT THREE 29. 31 CONTINUED: BASHIR Even if Vantika could isolate the patterns of chemical and electrical interactions in his own brain, he'd still need a way to move them from one brain to another... DAX Kobliads don't have psychic abilities like Vulcans, so we're assuming that we're looking for a physical transfer method of some kind. BASHIR If we can find it, that might give us a way to flush him out of there. ODO I could assign some personnel to maintain continuous surveillance on Kajada... PRIMMIN (shakes his head) We're already stretched to the limit preparing for the shipment... why don't I just set up the computer to track her movements, alert us if she goes near a secured area... Sisko nods his approval. ODO At the very least, she has to be left out of our security plans... BASHIR She won't like that... SISKO I'm afraid we have no choice. DAX What do we tell her? ODO (I take the hard jobs) Nothing. She'll figure it out. And when she does, send her to me. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" - 11/25/92 - ACT THREE 29A. 32 INT. SECURITY OFFICE Kajada is in Odo's face... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT THREE 30. 32 CONTINUED: KAJADA The computer security codes have been changed... I've been denied access... why? ODO Because I ordered it. KAJADA What kind of fool are you? ODO My own special variety. KAJADA I'm the only one here who has experience with Vantika... ODO I'm sorry... I believe it's necessary at this point to limit access to the security files to four people -- myself, Lieutenant Primmin, Major Kira and Commander Sisko. KAJADA (sighs with frustration) When is the shipment scheduled to arrive? ODO I can't give you that information. KAJADA (more frustrated, another tack) What about this Ferengi, Quark? ODO (new interest) What about him? KAJADA From what I understand, he has his hands into everything around here. Is he under surveillance? ODO I always keep an eye on him. KAJADA I hope so. Because he's exactly the kind Vantika would use in his plans. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT THREE 31. 32 CONTINUED: (2) And she storms out... Odo muses a beat... 33 INT. QUARK'S SECOND FLOOR It's late. The place is closed. In the shadows of the second floor, a meeting is taking place between Quark, Durg and the two Bajorans. But our attention quickly is drawn to the third floor... where an unseen figure moves in shadows to overhear the conversation... DURG So when do we meet this Kobliad... QUARK When he decides it's appropriate... DURG All right then, a better question -- when do we get paid... QUARK When the job is completed of course... The figure moves out of the shadows into a streak of light on the stairwell... it's Kajada... 34 ANGLE - ON QUARK ET AL DURG Not acceptable. We will require an advance payment of seventy percent. QUARK Durg. Wake up. This is Quark, you're talking to. Remember. DURG All past debts have been settled. QUARK They'll never be settled. You'd still be rotting in a Cardassian jail if I hadn't... INFIRMARY Close on Kajada is laid out on an examining table half buried in medical machinery. She is semi-conscious, but barely coherent. BASHIR Can you speak... ? KAJADA (quietly) Pushed. Vantika. That's all she can say, move up to find Sisko, Quark, Odo... Bashir shakes his head to Sisko... BASHIR I can't keep her conscious any longer... if she moves around too much, she could suffer permanent paralysis... Sisko nods. SISKO Did you see anybody behind her? QUARK (shakes his head) I just heard the scream and looked up... she fell from the balcony... what was she doing up there anyway? ODO She had an odd feeling you might be helping someone hijack this deuridium shipment. QUARK I resent the inference. ODO It's not an inference. It's a definite suspicion. SISKO Was there anyone else in the bar? QUARK Anyone else? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT FOUR 34. 36 CONTINUED: SISKO At the time of the accident. QUARK No. No. Just me. Just tidying up. Which if you'll excuse me, I really must finish... EXITING together -- ODO Not so fast, Quark. I want to take a look at that third floor before you get rid of all the evidence. QUARK Be my guest. I'm telling you she was alone up there... and she had no business invading the privacy of a law-abiding member of the community... And they're out. SISKO (to Bashir) What do you think, Doctor? Could this have been a suicide attempt? BASHIR I didn't notice any indication of suicidal behavior... but who knows what the effect of... sharing one's brain might be? SISKO (frowns) I'd still like some confirmation of that. BASHIR I'll have to tend to her injuries before I can conduct any brain scans... but until we identify the transfer method Vantika used, I'm not even sure what to look for. DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT FOUR 35. 36 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO (acknowledges, hits his combadge) Computer, location of Lieutenant Dax. STASIS ROOM Close on the dead hand of Vantika... as Dax uses a small instrument to run under his fingernails and pull out some residue... Sisko arrives in the background, reacts to the odd scene... SISKO Find something under his fingernails? DAX Not yet. SISKO What were you looking for? DAX Confirmation of a theory. I hope. She puts the tiny dirt sample on a 24th century Petri dish... and moves to a small work station with microscopes and other equipment one would use in autopsy work... during the above action -- DAX I've been asking myself why anyone would want to induct a bio-electrical charge into a glial cell? SISKO (dry) A question I've always wondered about... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT FOUR 35A. 37 CONTINUED: DAX It might make sense if you wanted to send a bio-coded message along the glial cells of someone's nervous system... all the way to the brain. My guess is that's what Vantika was trying to do... SISKO Using his fingernails? During the following, Dax brings up and adjusts the Okudagram of the sample on the monitor... DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT FOUR 36. 37 CONTINUED: (2) DAX Frankly, I can't think of another way he could have delivered the bio- coded message. He must have used a very weak electrical charge, or the sensors on Kajada's ship would have detected it. Ideally, he would have injected the coded message directly into his victim's skin... but there were no hyposprays or needles anywhere on the ship. Dax's eyes light up. She shows Sisko her monitor. DAX A microscopic generator. 38 ANGLE (OPTICAL) Sisko looks at the Okudagram. It shows a very small device, buried in the material from under Vantika's nails. SISKO You're suggesting he had his consciousness stored in that thing? DAX (nods) His neural patterns encoded as bio- electrical pulses. He could have placed that device under his nail months ago... just in case he needed an escape route in an emergency. His last resort before death. SISKO Will this show up in Kajada? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/02/92 - ACT FOUR 36A. DAX Now that we know what to look for, we should be able to confirm it with a glial scan. ODO You better make this the final check... we've only got an hour... (she acknowledges) Where's Primmin? KIRA I thought he was with you. QUARK Seven... seven... let me see... that should be no problem... He reaches into a wallet-sized case and pulls out a security PADD... places it to the door panel... the door begins to roll open... DURG I'm beginning to believe this Vantika is invisible... QUARK His funds are quite real... they were transferred into my accounts this morning... and will be waiting for you upon your return... PRIMMIN I took a cue from you... ODO From me? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 11/30/92 - ACT FIVE 41. PRIMMIN You understood the logic of Vantika's M-O when he downloaded the computer memory -- avoid the single file and attack the system... ODO I'm not following. PRIMMIN Vantika has to know that all of our security efforts will be focused on the docking ring. I figured if he holds true to form that's not where he'd try to hurt us... so I ran a diagnostic of all systems that could shut our whole defense array down... ODO I already did that twice today... PRIMMIN I know. I didn't find anything either. But then I went to the back- up systems and I found a glitch there I couldn't explain... so I tracked it back to the waste reclamation system... where no one would ever think to look because it's considered non-essential... He holds out a tech device... PRIMMIN I found this. ODO Another subspace crossover shunt. Just like the one Vantika used to tap into the computer. PRIMMIN It was set to feedback into the primary command and control functions... ODO (examines the device) We would have been shut down for close to an hour. Looks rather good on me, don't you think? SISKO (angry, impatient) What have you done to his mind, Vantika? VANTIKA (calm) It was necessary to render him unconscious for the time being. However, I might consider leaving his body and returning him to you. But first you must release your tractor beam. SISKO I can't do that. VANTIKA If you don't, I'll take this vessel to warp. SISKO The tractor beam would rip your ship apart. You and everyone else on board would be killed. VANTIKA Exactly. So if you care at all about the welfare of your Doctor, you will release your hold on us. You have one minute to decide. He touches a panel and the monitor returns to the space station... Their shields are up. SISKO (to the group) Suggestions... ? KIRA A small ship like a Runabout might be able to get close enough to overload their shield generators with directed phaser fire... we used to do it to Cardassian freighters all the time... ODO But you'd be risking a hull breach... and with all the deuridium on board... SISKO He's right... we can't risk releasing deuridium into this system... every populated area would have to be evacuated... (beat) Dax... is there any way to disrupt Vantika's control over Bashir? Moving to her station and already beginning to work... DAX I have an exact model of Vantika's neural energy patterns. If I can design an electromagnetic pulse to disrupt those patterns, Julian might emerge... But we still need a way to get it there. SISKO What if we send it right along the tractor beam... at the same frequency as their shields... ? DEEP SPACE: "The Passenger" REV. 12/01/92 - ACT FIVE 47A. 56 CONTINUED: DAX (seeing it work) The pulse would resonate off the shields... and create a reflected EM field inside the ship... SISKO If I permit you to leave, what guarantee do I have that you'll return Bashir? VANTIKA You're ready to capitulate far too quickly, Commander. Would you be planning a rescue attempt, perhaps?
