Site Updates: 2012 Archives
July 6, 2012
Most of the icons and images have been updated to higher-resolution versions; there are still a few left where I need to get better-quality sources, or it's mostly pointless to improve them.
In the mean time, I also updated the general template of the site to make better use of HTML5 features. Right now that doesn't mean much, but it should make certain updates a lot easier. (Hooray for server-side includes and grep search to make updating 600 pages a breeze!)
(And for the 14% of my visitors who are using Internet Explorer 8 or earlier... you guys are lucky that I was able to find a relatively simple JavaScript hack that fixed the problem in about five minutes. Otherwise I would have just told you to get a better browser. Again.)

I've made some progress updating the titles and most of the various supporting images for the site. They should all look great on high-resolution displays! If some of the images look distorted, make sure to refresh your browser.

I've been slowly updating the images on the site to higher-quality versions. It'll take a while to convert everything, and I might not do all the photos and screenshots. But the hi-res buttons and titles look great on my new iPad!

Do... do my eyes deceive me? No! It’s a new episode of Star Trek: Series ?: Episode 144: “Dead Horse”! And boy, is it a weird one. (Yes, even by Series ? standards.)

I decided it's time to catch up on a little maintenance for the site. Nothing major, just clearing out some old files that aren't needed anymore, and I tweaked some of the style sheets. The big news is that I was finally able to take out most of the browser-specific exceptions (*cough*IE*cough*). Most visitors should now see the fancy animation effects on the home page buttons (and a couple other places) that was once only found in Safari.
Aside: As a long-time hater of Internet Explorer, I'm surprised to see how far it's caught up. (I don't use Windows at all, and so haven't have a chance to use a recent version in several years.) I've heard various comments about its improvements, but hadn't had a chance to check it out until recently when I started testing my CSS updates.
It makes this little ad all the more amusing: The Browser You Loved to Hate.

I've been having some troubles with the website lately, so if things don't seem to load properly, my apologies! Hopefully this will be sorted out soon.
